About Us
Water sources for both tap and bottled water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, while also potentially collecting substances from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water may include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics (byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, septic systems)
- Radioactive contaminants that can be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining
To ensure safe drinking water, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult their healthcare providers about drinking water safety. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
