IN YOUR YARD: Garden waste can transport harmful chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers into storm drains. It also generates significant bacteria as it decomposes in gutters and waterways. Keep gutters clear of plant debris and sweep up yard waste instead of hosing it down.
WATER CONSERVATION: Consider replacing lawns with native plants to reduce water consumption and minimize chemical usage. Prevent irrigation runoff by adjusting sprinklers and shortening watering periods. During rainy seasons, redirect downspouts to landscaped areas where water can replenish groundwater, or connect downspouts to rain barrels for later use.
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE: Automobiles can release contaminants including motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluids, and heavy metals. Regularly inspect your vehicle for fluid leaks and maintain it properly. Use funnels to prevent spills and keep absorbent materials handy.
