About Us
Certain populations may have increased vulnerability to contaminants in municipal water compared to the general public. Individuals with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, elderly individuals, and infants - may face higher risks from infections. These vulnerable groups should consult healthcare providers regarding their water consumption.
The EPA and CDC provide guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791). All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least minimal amounts of some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Municipal water originates from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land surfaces or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can collect substances from animal presence or human activity. The EPA and State Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, with State Board regulations also setting similar safety standards for bottled water.
Residents can participate in decisions affecting their water by attending City Council meetings held the first and third Tuesday monthly at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers (608 Heber Avenue, Calexico, CA 92231). For meeting agendas, call (760) 768-2102.
Calexico purchases water from the Imperial Irrigation District (IID), which blends surface water from the Colorado River via the All American Canal. This water undergoes treatment at the Calexico Water Plant before distribution. A watershed survey completed in March 2015 assessed contamination vulnerabilities, finding that natural Colorado River flushing and existing treatment methods effectively mitigate potential contaminant sources. The raw 25 MG reservoir provides backup when water cannot be drawn directly from the All American Canal/Colorado River. For survey details, contact Imperial Irrigation District at 760-335-3640.
