THE OASIS OF MARA HISTORY
The earliest settlers of Twentynine Palms were Native Americans who established communities around the Oasis of Mara. Gold Rush prospectors arrived in the 1870s, followed by cattle ranchers in the 1880s who were drawn to the region's grasslands. The Oasis provided essential shelter from the harsh desert environment and continued attracting new residents throughout the 1900s.
MEETING GROWING WATER NEEDS
Private developers initially created small water distribution systems to meet increasing demand. The first public water network was established in 1938. Several public water companies formed over subsequent decades, and in 1954, residents voted to consolidate these facilities into the Twentynine Palms County Water District (Charter). The local Chamber of Commerce "water committee" led this community initiative, selecting the district's inaugural Board of Directors: John Wuerth, John Bagley, William Hatch Jr., John Lyon and Joseph Wasserburger. By 1955, the District had incorporated three additional private water companies, acquiring over 200,000 gallons of water resources.
ENSURING WATER SAFETY AND RELIABILITY
A 1983 groundwater survey by the Department of Water Resources revealed alarming conditions, prompting the development of the District Master Plan addressing critical infrastructure needs. The District faced serious challenges including deteriorating pipeline systems and excessively high fluoride levels. The California State Health Department required implementation timelines for improvements by 1984. With funding from the Department of Water Resources and EPA, the District made significant upgrades over 20 years: replacing over 100,000 feet of pipeline, constructing multiple storage reservoirs, and building a $1.7 million fluoride treatment facility. In 2005, additional EPA grants funded two more million-gallon storage reservoirs and 43,000 feet of new pipeline, enhancing water reliability throughout the service area.
