The Coachella Water Authority and Sanitary District is proud to present our 2017 Customer Confidence Report. We provide this annual report to keep residents informed about their water quality and the ongoing efforts we make to deliver safe, reliable service to our community.
We invite you to become familiar with our newly unified name. We've consolidated the Coachella Utilities Department, Coachella Water Authority, and Coachella Sanitary District under one banner that better reflects our mission: providing safe municipal water and dependable sewer services to enhance quality of life in Coachella.
Maintaining reliable water service begins with responsible management of our precious water resources. Despite occasional spring storms in 2018, California continues to experience predominantly dry conditions, with the U.S. Drought Monitor reporting 70% of the state facing abnormally dry weather and minimal rainfall. The Coachella Valley remains among Southern California's driest regions.
Water conservation remains essential in California, and we commend your ongoing commitment to wise water usage. Your efforts make a difference!
For our Spanish-speaking residents: El Coachella Water Authority and Sanitary District se complace en presentar este Informe de Confianza del Cliente 2017. Jason L. Rector was the first permanent settler in Coachella. Born in Iowa on January 16, 1853, he received his education there before working in the postal service and later engaging in farming and real estate.
RAILROAD DEVELOPMENT
In 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad began operating trains between Los Angeles and Indio (originally called Indian Wells) on a four-hour schedule, with A.N. Towne serving as General Superintendent. By 1884, Mr. Rector had moved to San Diego where he worked in the butcher and cattle trade before accepting a position with Southern Pacific Railroad to harvest wood from their extensive land holdings.
FROM WOODSPUR TO COACHELLA
Coachella's history dates back to 1898 when the valley was largely undeveloped desert. At that time, the area was covered with mesquite and greasewood. Jason L. Rector established a mesquite wood terminal on a Southern Pacific Railroad siding (called "Woodspur") that shipped timber to Los Angeles markets.
ARTESIAN WATER DISCOVERY
The settlement remained known as Woodspur for three years. Development began in earnest when Rector and his brother Lon tested their theory that abundant water lay beneath the desert. They dug the first well four miles east of Indio, striking a pure artesian water source 550 feet deep at what is now the intersection of Grapefruit Avenue and Fifth Street. The eight-month drilling project was completed in November 1900.
A NAMING ERROR CREATES COACHELLA
When establishing the town, Rector declined having it named after himself and suggested "Conchilla" (Spanish for "little shells") due to the abundance of small shells in the area. However, when designs were sent to printers for the town's announcement, they misread "Conchilla" as "Coachella" (mistaking "n" for "a" and "i" for "e"). Rather than delay their announcement, Rector and others accepted the name Coachella, which became permanent.
