City of Thornton
About Us
Thornton's municipal water originates as mountain snowmelt. The city collects snowmelt from the South Platte River in northern Colorado and from Clear Creek near Golden. South Platte water is stored in a network of gravel lakes before treatment, while Clear Creek water is primarily stored in Standley Lake, with a smaller portion diverted to Thornton's gravel lakes.
In 2002, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment conducted a Source Water Assessment for Thornton's water supplies. This assessment identified potential contamination sources such as gasoline storage tanks, wastewater treatment discharges, and mine drainage. These sites were identified as potential—not confirmed—contamination sources.
All tap water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants. While their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk, some individuals may be more vulnerable than others. People with compromised immune systems (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients), elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks and should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water to ensure public health protection. Water sources (rivers, lakes, streams) naturally contain minerals and sometimes radioactive materials that water treatment processes cannot completely remove.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, and farming
- Lead, which may come from service lines and home plumbing components
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from resource extraction activities
Thornton doesn't install lead service lines, and elevated lead levels haven't been detected in the city. However, if concerned about lead exposure, residents can flush their taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. Information about lead in drinking water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline: 1-800-426-4791 or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
