City of Vernon Municipal Water Report Info

The history of Vernon dates back to 17 years after the 1860 Battle of the Pease River, when white settlers first arrived in the Red River Valley. The battle site, located 16 miles northwest of present-day Vernon, marked the defeat of Chief Peta Nocona and the capture of his white wife, Cynthia Ann Parker, mother of the renowned Comanche leader Quanah Parker.

Permanent settlement began in 1878 when C.F. Doan and his family established themselves in the valley. Doan built an adobe house (which remains standing today) and operated a store that became known to countless cowboys on the Western Trail as Doan's Crossing.

Vernon itself was established in 1880, initially named Eagle Flat. In 1881, the community received a post office when its name changed to Vernon. A frontier trading post operated nearby at Condon Springs (now the location of Hillcrest Country Club). By 1882, Vernon boasted its first hotel, two mercantiles, one pharmacy, and four saloons.

The town's early soundtrack included wild horses, thundering cattle herds, coyote howls, and the bustle of saloons and gambling houses—all elements of pioneer life on the frontier. By 1889, Vernon had grown to 2,000 residents and welcomed its first railroad, transforming the area from buffalo ranges and cattle trails to the modern commercial center it remains today.
