Water Source: The Naugatuck Central System serves Connecticut Water Company customers in Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Middlebury, Prospect, and Waterbury. Water for this system comes from both surface and groundwater sources located in Naugatuck and Prospect.
Sources of tap water include reservoirs, lakes, wells, and springs. As water travels over land or through soil, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances from animal or human activities, including:
- Bacteria and viruses from septic systems, livestock, or wildlife
- Sediments and metals, occurring naturally or from stormwater runoff
- Pesticides and herbicides from various agricultural, urban, or residential sources
- Industrial chemicals from manufacturing facilities, gas stations, or wastewater systems
- Naturally occurring radioactive substances
Protecting Water Resources: Many residents don't realize that most pollution enters waterways through stormwater runoff from streets, driveways, golf courses, athletic fields, construction sites, farms, and residential areas. You can help reduce pollution by:
- Limiting lawn chemical use, especially before heavy rain
- Properly disposing of pet waste to prevent runoff into streams or storm drains
- Having septic systems inspected every two years and promptly addressing maintenance needs
- Properly disposing of automotive fluids and household chemicals
- Reporting construction site runoff to local zoning officials
Connecticut Water regularly inspects over 3,200 properties within public watershed areas. Our inspectors protect your water by ensuring properties meet Connecticut DPH regulations, monitoring for failing septic systems, unauthorized discharges, livestock issues, soil erosion, leaking heating oil tanks, fertilizer and pesticide misuse, and illegal dumping that could affect water quality.
