The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that municipal water suppliers provide annual water quality reports (CCRs) to their customers. These reports summarize information about water sources, detected contaminants, compliance status, and educational initiatives.

Municipal water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of certain substances. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.

The City of Newark Water Department has proudly delivered high-quality water since 1888. Through our regular testing program, Newark consistently meets water quality standards set by the Delaware Division of Public Health Office of Drinking Water and the EPA. The tables on pages 4-6 of this report list all substances found in finished water during 2017.

At the Curtis Water Treatment Plant (CWTP), water from White Clay Creek undergoes clarification with alum and polymer before filtration removes harmful particles. Chlorine is added to eliminate bacteria and viruses. Additional chemicals include fluoride for dental health and lime to reduce water corrosivity.

The South Well Field Iron & Manganese Removal Plant aerates well water with forced-air blowers to remove volatile compounds and improve pH. The water receives chlorine treatment before passing through green sand filters that remove iron and manganese. Other additives include fluoride, lime for pH adjustment, and polyphosphate to reduce corrosiveness.

The City maintains approximately 140 miles of water mains throughout the distribution system. Eight storage tanks hold enough water to last days. The 317-million-gallon reservoir provides a reliable raw water source that can be treated during heavy rain or drought periods. To minimize sediment buildup, we flush the entire system yearly. We test 40 distribution samples monthly for bacteria and chlorine levels, with regulated chemicals sampled as required.

Water Distribution System
The distribution network provides water services to 33,000 customers including 26,463 residents. Annually, more than 1.3 billion gallons of water flows through 91 miles of piping to serve 7,500 water service connections. Additionally, the system supports 1,300 industrial and commercial accounts.

Wastewater Management
The sanitary sewer system transports over 2.2 billion gallons of sewage yearly through 73 miles of sewer lines. Operating on a gravity-based system, the network uses primary pumping stations to direct sewage from the city through the New Castle County system to the Wilmington Regional Wastewater Treatment facility.
