2017 marked a significant year for the Town of Dyer. The West Lake Expansion studies were completed and submitted to federal authorities for review. NICTD anticipates responses this spring, with state and local entities already securing their funding portions.

Infrastructure remains our top priority. Communities that neglect regular maintenance face increased costs over time - similar to how postponing roof repairs on your home eventually leads to complete replacement at greater expense.

Our "One Dig" strategy carefully evaluates multiple factors when planning infrastructure improvements. This approach examines underground utilities (sanitary, storm, and water) before road resurfacing to maximize cost-effectiveness. In 2017, we completed One Dig projects on Blaney, Roy, and James streets at a combined cost of $1,046,039.20, funded through utility reserves and capital funds.

Additionally, we completed improvements to Calumet Avenue north of U.S. 30, funded through Tax Increment Financing and an INDOT Community Crossing Matching Grant. For 2018, we received a $400,000 Community Crossing Grant for Sheffield/Hart Street improvements from Main Street to U.S. 30, scheduled to begin this spring.

The water utility completed repainting of the Sandy Ridge elevated tank and contributed over $600,000 to the 2017 One Dig project. The Sanitary Board initiated crucial projects at the Waste Water Treatment Plant, including Sludge Holding and Dewatering Buildings. While not glamorous, these facilities are essential to overall operations. The Board also completed $250,000 in system repairs, with $350,000 authorized for 2018 continuations, prioritizing areas where residents have experienced basement backups.
