Schererville Water Department is pleased to share this water quality report with our community. This report details the quality of your municipal water supply from January 1 through December 31, 2017.

Our water supply met or exceeded all stringent regulations set by both Indiana State and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which requires all water suppliers to provide annual reports to every customer. In 2017, our department distributed 1,208,103,000 gallons of water to residents. We purchase pre-treated water from Indiana-American Water Company, which sources from Lake Michigan.

Indiana-American treats your water using chloramines as part of the disinfection process to protect against microbial contamination. Chloramines combine chlorine with a small amount of ammonia to destroy potentially harmful bacteria. This treatment method has been used nationwide for decades and is considered more stable than chlorine alone. Many consumers prefer the taste of chloraminated water as it lacks the distinctive chlorine flavor. The chloramines also create a protective barrier against contamination as the treated water moves through the distribution system.

While chlorination effectively treats water, direct introduction into the bloodstream can be harmful. Therefore, chloramines must be removed before use in kidney dialysis machines or aquariums and ponds.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has developed assessment plans for all public water systems' surface and ground water sources statewide. Their plan identifies potential contaminant sources. We welcome your input on environmental water quality concerns.

During 2017, the water delivered to your home or business complied with or exceeded all state and federal municipal water requirements. We've compiled a list showing which substances were detected in your water supply. Though all substances listed are below the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) set by the EPA, we believe transparency about what's in your water is important.

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants may face increased risk from infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. Guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
