Where does La Porte's water originate? Water Source: The City of La Porte receives water from 10 wells across four field locations within the Kankakee River Basin Aquifer.

Water Treatment Process: Well water undergoes a comprehensive treatment process before reaching your tap. This includes aeration, filtration, and careful application of chlorine and fluoride at regulated levels. Orthophosphate is added in small amounts to prevent pipe corrosion. Treated water is then pumped through the distribution system as needed.

Distribution Network: La Porte's water flows through over 145 miles of iron pipes arranged in a grid pattern. The system includes more than 1,500 valves, 1,000 fire hydrants, and 7,800 water service connections. Water storage consists of a 1.2 million gallon concrete reservoir and three elevated tanks holding 500,000 gallons each. Advanced computer systems monitor treatment and distribution processes, with operators on duty 24/7.

Public Engagement: Questions about this report? Contact Todd Taylor or Henry Snyder at 219-326-9540, or attend Board of Public Works Meetings held the first and third Tuesday monthly at City Hall (801 Michigan Avenue).

Health Information: All drinking water, including bottled varieties, may contain trace contaminants. While their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk, certain populations may be more vulnerable. Individuals with compromised immune systems, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and infants should seek medical advice regarding their water consumption. For guidelines on reducing infection risks, contact the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Water Sources and Potential Contaminants: Municipal water originates from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can collect substances from animal or human activity, including microbial contaminants, inorganic materials, pesticides, organic chemicals, and radioactive elements.

Water Safety Oversight: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establishes guidelines limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. The city conducts regular testing to ensure compliance. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for bottled water contaminants to provide equivalent public health protection.

Lead Testing Information: With resident cooperation, La Porte Water Department collects samples from homes with plumbing that might contain lead. Current testing shows levels below action thresholds. If your home has older plumbing with lead pipes or solder, reduce exposure by running water for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after periods of non-use. Always use cold water for drinking, cooking, and baby formula. For concerns about lead, consider water testing. More information is available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
