Operating solely on revenues from rates and service charges, the department receives no funding from sales or property taxes. The Business Office handles meter reading, billing, accounts receivable and payable, personnel records, and customer service functions.

Beyond serving over 23,934 metered connections within its incorporated boundaries, Hammond supplies potable water to neighboring communities including Dyer, Griffith, Highland, Whiting, and Munster in Indiana. The service area extends to Illinois municipalities such as South Holland, Calumet City, Ford Heights, Burnham, Lynwood, Lansing, and Chicago Heights, with Chicago Heights further supplying water to Thornton, Glenwood, and South Chicago Heights.

The Hammond Water Works Department maintains three elevated storage facilities:

  • 173rd and Harrison: 2.5 million-gallon tank
  • 165th and Columbia: 1.5 million-gallon tank
  • 169th and Parrish: 2.5 million-gallon tank
  • Hohman Avenue: one underground 6 million-gallon tank

  • 400 miles of water main
  • 32,000 service connections
  • 1,769 fire hydrants
  • Over 3,000 valves
