California Water Utility Companies

EBMUD is proud to report that in 2017, your tap water met or exceeded all state and federal public health requirements. From the Sierra Nevada to the East Bay, 1.4 million customers depend on high-quality EBMUD water every minute of every day.

Most of EBMUD's water comes from the 577-square mile Mokelumne River watershed on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. This region consists primarily of national forest, EBMUD-owned lands, and other undeveloped areas minimally affected by human activity. The Mokelumne watershed gathers snowmelt from Alpine, Amador, and Calaveras counties, which flows into Pardee Reservoir near the town of Valley Springs.

Three large aqueducts transport water 90 miles from Pardee Reservoir to the East Bay. During drought periods, high demand times, system maintenance, or operational needs, EBMUD may draw water from other watersheds (such as the Sacramento River) or from local East Bay watersheds. EBMUD's skilled staff and network of reservoirs, pipelines, pumps, and water treatment plants deliver reliable water daily.

Regardless of the source, all water undergoes treatment at one of six EBMUD water treatment facilities before reaching your tap. These plants can filter and process more than 375 million gallons of water daily. EBMUD takes numerous steps to ensure high water quality, including careful watershed and reservoir management, water treatment, operating a sophisticated distribution system, maintaining facilities, and addressing customer concerns.

EBMUD thoroughly samples and tests your water to ensure it's safe to drink. We test for over 100 substances including microorganisms, pesticides, herbicides, asbestos, lead, copper, petroleum products, and by-products of industrial and water treatment processes. More than 20,000 tests annually guarantee the safety of your tap water.
