The U.S. EPA establishes regulations that limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure tap water safety. Similarly, the FDA sets standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
All municipal water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of certain contaminants. These trace amounts don't necessarily indicate health risks. Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells.
As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and substances from animal or human activities. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, farming, or mining
- Pesticides & Herbicides: From agricultural sources, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: Synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities

Fayette County, Georgia, December 28, 2018: Effective immediately, Graves Road is closed to all through traffic between Ginger Cake Road and Eastin Road due to ongoing precipitation causing culvert washout. Detour signs are posted, and a reroute map is available below.
The Graves Road Culvert Replacement SPLOST project is scheduled for construction bidding after January 1st. Final design is complete, with construction pending property acquisition. Residents should visit the County website for the latest updates on all 2017 SPLOST projects.
