Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Fulton Municipal Water Company and CDCWho should we contact for after-hours water emergencies? We offer an answering service for emergency calls outside regular hours. Simply call our standard office number (573) 449-0324 and follow the prompt to press "one" to be redirected to our answering service. They'll collect your information and notify our on-call certified service personnel. Billing inquiries are only handled during normal office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
What should I do if I'm experiencing low water pressure? First, inspect your meter and surrounding area for potential leaks. Then, contact our office to report the pressure issue in your location.
Why is my water discolored? Recent repairs may have introduced air into the line, causing a milky appearance.
What chemicals does our utility district add to the water? We only use chemicals approved by the National Safety Foundation specifically for drinking water treatment.
My water tastes, smells, or looks unusual. Is it safe? All public water systems must maintain minimum chlorine levels of 0.2 mg/L (tested at each line's end) by state law. Systems using chloramine must maintain 0.5 mg/L levels. We test our disinfectant levels daily to ensure your safety.
Why do particles come out of the faucet when running hot water? Your water heater likely needs flushing. CAUTION: Most manufacturers recommend hiring a professional for this service. If attempting it yourself, carefully read the owner's manual to prevent injury or damage.
Why do I have a previous balance when I know I sent my payment? We may have received it after the due date or possibly not received it at all. Contact our office for assistance resolving this issue.
Where is the billing and customer service office located? Our billing office is at 1500 North Seventh Street in Columbia, MO. We're one block north of the Business Loop. For convenience, we provide a drive-up window on the west building end with a night deposit slot and payment envelopes just beyond the drive-up drawer.
What are your office hours? Our regular business hours for district matters, billing questions, and customer service requests are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding certain holidays.
How often are water bills sent? All customer bills are sent on the first working day of each month and are due by the 15th. If the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the due date extends to the next business day.
Is my water meter read monthly? Yes, our service personnel read your meter every month. The reading shows your actual water usage from the previous month on your bill. During severe weather (extreme cold, ice, or heavy snow), we may estimate usage based on your history.
Why must I pay a security deposit for a new account despite my good credit? All new customers must pay a deposit to help ensure payment for services, even if customers move without notice or forwarding address. Deposits help keep costs down for everyone. The Water District operates as a non-profit organization.
When do I get my security deposit back? Security deposits are automatically applied as credit to your final bill. You'll receive either a final bill or refund check. If moving to another address within the district, a new deposit will be required as we don't transfer deposits between addresses.
Do you offer budget billing? We don't currently provide budget billing. However, you may pay ahead to maintain a credit balance that we'll reduce monthly by your billed amount.
Can I change my billing date, meter read date, or payment due date? These dates are established in the Water User's Agreement and District Rules and Regulations and cannot be modified without Board approval. Our personnel read meters on a fixed monthly schedule to control costs.
Is sewer service included on my bill? Can I pay my sewer bill to you? No, sewer charges aren't included in your monthly water bill. We only bill and collect for the water services we provide.
Do you have a night dropbox for after-hours payments? Yes, our night deposit box is located on the west side of our building just past the drive-up window.
Do I need a water softener in my home or business? Water hardness preferences vary by individual. Softened water typically requires less soap for laundry, but water that's too soft can potentially harm pipes or even affect health. Hard water uses more soap and may be tough on appliances. C.P.W.S.D. No. 1 water generally falls in the moderately hard range with approximately 12-17 grains hardness.
