About Us
UNDERSTANDING YOUR WATER SUPPLY
All sources of municipal water (both tap water and bottled water) originate from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels across land or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from human and animal activities.
To ensure safe tap water, the EPA establishes guidelines limiting contaminant levels in public water systems and bottled water. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) either naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, farming, or mining
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, storm water runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
Water treatment includes sodium hypochlorite to reduce bacteria and virus risks, sodium fluoride for dental health, and Carus 8100 to reduce lead and copper levels.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, elderly residents, and infants. These individuals should seek medical advice about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from cryptosporidium and other microbes are available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
