About Us, The Cambridge Water Department (CWD) is a municipally owned and operated water utility serving over 100,000 residents. Operating under the City Manager's oversight, the CWD receives guidance from the five-member Cambridge Water Board appointed by the City Manager.
The CWD operates through three divisions: Administration, Transmission and Distribution. Our mission is to provide Cambridge residents with safe, sufficient and continuous high-quality water supply.
We continue implementing our long-term strategic plan to maintain the Cambridge water system's integrity. Our infrastructure includes watershed facilities with gatehouses, dams, and valves; the Stony Brook conduit; Fresh Pond Reservoir; the treatment plant; Payson Park finished water supply; transmission lines; the distribution network; and three MWRA emergency connections.
Our ongoing priorities include enhancing customer service, energy conservation through our GreenSense Program, technological improvements like variable frequency drives on pumps, process modifications for storage and filtration, renewable energy implementation, revitalizing the distribution system, and improvements to Fresh Pond Reservation guided by the Master Plan.
We actively pursue partnerships with the Department of Public Works to coordinate water main upgrades with sewer separation and roadway projects, maximizing efficiency while minimizing public disruption.
