Mechanikham was established in 1836 when wealthy landowner Nicholas Noel Destrehan commissioned surveyor Benjamin Buisson to divide his riverside property into lots. Buisson created a two-street wide settlement with Huey P. Long Avenue (originally Copernicus Avenue) at the center, flanked by Newton and Weyer Streets. Mechanikham quickly became home to numerous German immigrants who played vital roles in the city's development, with their descendants becoming prominent Gretna citizens.
The Gretna community was founded two years later when St. Mary's Market Steam Ferry Company purchased and divided a four-block wide area directly downriver from Mechanikham. Gretna's streets were systematically arranged similar to Mechanikham, with numbered cross streets as they remain today. A key feature was its dedicated ferry landing positioned directly across from St. Mary's Market in New Orleans.
McDonoghville, established in 1815, represents Gretna's earliest subdivided development. Named after its philanthropic founder John McDonogh, the McDonoghville Historic District features modest homes set back on generous lots with minimal commercial corridors, creating a tranquil atmosphere rooted in its origins as a private farming community. The 1845 publication Norman's New Orleans noted that in "MacDonough" - "the country, the beautiful country is all around—and the noise and confusion of the city no longer disturb you." Though McDonoghville has been part of Gretna since 1913, it maintains its distinct character from more urbanized neighboring areas.
The opening of the Mississippi River Bridge in 1958 and construction of the Westbank Expressway transformed Gretna's urban landscape. The Expressway cut through primarily residential sections, eliminating the 1400 block of Gretna and isolating the southern Jonestown neighborhood from the rest of the city. This new thoroughfare quickly evolved into a commercial corridor as residential development along it disappeared. The convenient access to New Orleans spurred population growth and expansion with more suburban-style development in southern areas – including the growth of Bellevue, New Garden Park and Timberlane subdivisions.
