About Us
This 2018 statement provides essential information about your municipal water and highlights Johnson County SUD's ongoing efforts to deliver safe water to residents. The data presented comes from January-December 2017 testing results.
Johnson County SUD currently services approximately 17,000 connections, covering most of rural Johnson County and portions of Tarrant, Ellis, and Hill counties. Below are key infrastructure projects that demonstrate our commitment to providing safe, affordable water while conserving resources.
Smart-Meter Infrastructure Upgrades
JCSUD is implementing an Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) system throughout our network. This technology allows:
- Real-time monitoring of customer water usage
- Immediate leak detection through continuous flow monitoring
- Customer access to hourly water consumption data
- Enhanced conservation through better usage awareness
- Improved operational efficiency with fewer service calls
The AMI project, guided by experienced consultants, is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2019.
Waterline Improvement Projects
Approximately one-third of our system consists of smaller 3-inch and under diameter lines. Our hydraulic modeling software helps identify priority sections (called "redlines") that need upgrading or replacement.
Over the past four years, we've invested $2.1 million to upgrade roughly 9 miles of pipeline to 6, 8, and 12-inch capacity. Recent projects include:
- 6,800 linear feet of 6-inch waterline along S. Hwy 171 and CR 314
- 1,670 linear feet of 8-inch line extension on CR 913A
- Ongoing work on Pockets St. and CR 205 line replacements
New Service Center Completion
Our original office at 2849 S. Hwy 171, built in 1980, has been supplemented with a new Service Center completed in early 2017. Phase 2 construction, including administrative facilities, is currently underway with completion expected by late 2018.
Importantly, less than half of the Phase 2 costs come from ratepayer collections, with significant funding derived from non-operating revenue and cost reductions from our water supply changes.
Water Conservation Efforts
JCSUD currently reports 16% water loss (255 million gallons) from our system - better than many utilities but still an area for improvement. We're implementing a comprehensive Water Loss Control Program that includes:
- Detailed water audits to identify loss points
- Targeted interventions to address system leaks
- Performance monitoring to evaluate effectiveness
- Meter accuracy improvements to reduce apparent losses
As Johnson County SUD celebrates its 50th anniversary, these initiatives demonstrate our commitment to excellence in planning for the next 50 years of service to our community.
