About Us
The U.S. EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure tap water safety. Similarly, the FDA sets standards for bottled water. All water sources, whether tap or bottled, naturally contain some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks.
Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife
- Inorganic pollutants like salts and metals, occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants, byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production
- Radioactive contaminants, either naturally occurring or from oil/gas activities
Some contaminants may affect taste, odor or color without posing health risks. For concerns about water quality, contact our office.
OUR MUNICIPAL WATER IS SAFE
The City of Grand Prairie provides safe, reliable water meeting all EPA and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) standards.
IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION
Immunocompromised individuals—including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people on steroid treatments, and those with HIV/AIDS—may be particularly vulnerable to certain microbial contaminants like Cryptosporidium. Consult your healthcare provider about your water consumption. Guidelines for reducing infection risk are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
GRAND PRAIRIE WATER SOURCES
Grand Prairie maintains a "Superior" water quality rating using both surface and groundwater. We purchase water from Dallas, Fort Worth, and Midlothian. Dallas uses seven sources: the Elm Fork of the Trinity River and lakes Grapevine, Lewisville, Ray Hubbard, Ray Roberts, Tawakoni, and Fork. Fort Worth's sources include Lake Benbrook, Lake Bridgeport, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Worth, Cedar Creek and Richland Chambers Reservoirs, and the Clear Fork Trinity River. Midlothian draws from Joe Pool Lake, Richland Chambers and Cedar Creek Reservoirs. Grand Prairie also operates up to 10 groundwater wells from the Trinity Aquifer, particularly during high-demand summer months.
LEAD IN HOME PLUMBING
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While we provide quality water, we cannot control materials used in plumbing components. When water sits for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. For lead testing information, call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or visit www.EPA.gov/safewater/lead.
