About Us
Your Water Quality The TCEQ is responsible for overseeing Texas environmental regions, including Richmond's water quality. They collect and analyze samples for metals, minerals, volatile compounds, chlorine derivatives and radiological substances. Richmond has earned the TCEQ's "Superior" water system rating - their highest designation.
Water Sources and Supply: Richmond's municipal water comes from groundwater through six wells ranging from 480 to 1,000 feet in depth. These wells draw from the Gulf Coast Aquifer, with current daily production of 11,620,000 gallons.
Water Loss Information: The Texas Water Development Board requires annual water loss audits. From January-December 2016, Richmond's system lost approximately 28,147,089 gallons from 461,669,406 gallons pumped - about 6% of total water pumped. For questions about water loss, contact Scott Fajkus, Utilities Coordinator at (281) 342-0559.
Important Health Information: EPA regulations limit contaminants in public water systems, while FDA establishes similar protections for bottled water. Some people may be particularly vulnerable to certain contaminants, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, the elderly and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about drinking water safety.
Lead Awareness: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from service lines and home plumbing materials. When water sits in pipes for several hours, flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption can reduce potential exposure.
Stormwater Management: As stormwater flows over surfaces, it collects pollutants before entering waterways untreated. By adopting healthy household habits, residents can prevent common pollutants like pesticides, pet waste, and automotive fluids from contaminating our water supply.

Richmond, the county seat of Fort Bend County, sits on the Brazos River fifteen miles southwest of Houston. The city connects to major transportation routes including U.S. expressways 90A and 59, and rail lines operated by Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.
The settlement's origins trace back to mid-1822 when approximately fifteen men led by William W. Little established a camp near the present city location. This early settlement, which became known as Fort Bend or the "Fort Settlement," was built around a log fortress at a bend in the Brazos River. The community was temporarily abandoned during the 1836 Runaway Scrape.
In early 1837, Robert Eden Handy and William Lusk established the town of Richmond, named after Richmond, England. The Republic of Texas incorporated Richmond in May 1837, and when Fort Bend County formed in December, Richmond became its county seat. The community quickly developed with a Methodist Episcopal church organized in January 1839 and the weekly Richmond Telescope newspaper beginning publication in April.
Early residents included notable Texan historical figures like Erastus "Deaf" Smith and Jane Long, with Mirabeau B. Lamar residing on a nearby farm. By 1851, Richmond featured a brick courthouse, two stores, a Masonic Hall, the Methodist church, and the Richmond Male and Female Academy. Despite a yellow fever epidemic in 1853, the town's future seemed secure when the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway arrived in 1855.
