HOPKINS COUNTY RESOURCES

The Hopkins County Genealogical Library at 611 N. Davis preserves research materials for family and county historical records. The Hopkins County Historical Society Museum and Heritage Park (416 N. Jackson Street) showcases 17 restored historical buildings across 11 acres, including the 1910 George and Myra Wilson home that houses collections of dolls, Civil War memorabilia, and regional fossils.

HISTORY OF SULPHUR SPRINGS

Originally founded as Bright Star in the 1840s, settlers established homes near over 100 natural springs in the area. The town was recharted in 1870 and became the Hopkins County seat. In 1871, it was renamed Sulphur Springs to market the area as a health resort due to the mineral-rich waters. The railroad's arrival in 1872 brought visitors seeking the therapeutic springs, while the fertile soil supported agricultural development.

A new courthouse of red Texas stone was built in 1895 after the previous one burned in 1894. The Carnation Milk Company's 1937 arrival established Hopkins County as the "Dairy Capital of Texas," a title it has maintained for over 50 years. Though dairy farms have declined to 65 producers as of 2019, the county remains the state's #2 milk producer with 54.6 million pounds annually.

Today, Sulphur Springs is home to over 16,000 residents, with seven school districts in the county. The community continues to evolve with expanding equine operations drawing national attention and offering various amenities including parks, healthcare facilities, and over 115 churches.
