Keokuk Municipal Water Works Drinking Water Report Info

In 1877, William Stripe's concern for clean water led him to establish the Keokuk Waterworks, a private enterprise dedicated to collecting and treating Mississippi River water for the growing city of Keokuk. The facility remained privately owned until 1938 when the City of Keokuk acquired it.

Following the acquisition, the water company was placed under the management of an independent Board of Trustees, with members nominated by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. That same year, a new treatment facility featuring four settling basins, two filters, and a million-gallon elevated storage tower was constructed.

Further improvements were made in 1959, 1963, and 1979. In 1995, a major upgrade began to replace the aging infrastructure with an entirely new treatment plant. Phase 1 introduced a 14-million-gallon daily treatment process, while Phase 2 implemented ultra-filtration membranes to replace conventional sand filters.
