Muscatine Power & Water Municipal Water Report Information

MP&W is located along the Mississippi River in Iowa, approximately 30 miles from the Quad Cities metropolitan area. We're a municipal utility providing water, electric, and communications services to Muscatine and surrounding communities.

Each utility was established through local resident voting: Water in 1900, Electric in 1922, and Communications in 1997. We operate to benefit our customer-owners and the Muscatine community.

Our Water Utility draws from the rich Muscatine Island Aquifer. The water is naturally filtered through sand and rock formations in the aquifer, producing high-quality water requiring minimal chemical treatment. We add small amounts of fluoride for dental health, chlorine for disinfection, and phosphate to stabilize naturally occurring minerals.

Our Water Utility employs 11 highly trained and DNR/state certified professionals who monitor, treat, and maintain our water system. Public health and customer confidence in our water quality drive everything we do.

Electricity for our customers is generated locally. Approximately 120 employees operate and maintain three coal-fired generating units at our Power Plant, with a combined nameplate capacity of 293.55 MW - the largest generating capacity of any municipal utility in Iowa. Another 40 employees in our Transmission and Distribution department maintain reliable infrastructure to safely deliver electricity to homes and businesses.
