Our History and Development
Lakewood Water District was established on June 1, 1943 following a community vote on May 22, 1943. At its formation, the District provided water to approximately 7,900 residents.
1943 Beginning Statistics:
• 369 Water connections
• 41 Miles of water mains
• 3 Water storage tanks (600,000 gallons total capacity)
• 4 Wells
• 3 Elected Commissioners
• Average bi-monthly water bill: $2.58
Current Operations:
Today, the District serves over 60,000 retail customers in Lakewood, WA plus 55,000 wholesale customers, totaling 115,000 people. We supply wholesale water to the Town of Steilacoom and Summit Water and Supply Co., with existing contracts with Rainier View Water Company and Spanaway Water Company. We've also created a network of emergency interties with neighboring providers including Tacoma Water, Parkland Light and Water, and Town of Steilacoom.

• 13 Water storage tanks (27,300,000 gallons total capacity)
• 32 Wells (30 active)
• 3 Elected Commissioners
• Average bi-monthly water bill: $38.89 (based on 1500cf and 5/8" meter)
Notable Achievements:
• Our rates are the lowest in Washington State for utilities serving over 15,000 connections
• Our Replacement and Rehabilitation Program began in 1995; in 2014, we launched a new 50-year program to replace 180 miles of aging water mains throughout our system
