YOUR WATER SUPPLY

Downey extracts groundwater from the Central Groundwater Basin, an extensive network of natural aquifers stretching from Los Angeles to Orange County. This basin receives water from multiple sources: natural rainfall and snowmelt infiltration, artificially introduced imported and recycled water, plus groundwater flow from neighboring basins.

The City of Downey sits directly above this valuable water resource. The municipal supply comes from 20 wells positioned throughout city boundaries, providing Downey's primary potable water source.

At the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Rivers entry points of the Montebello Forebay, designated spreading grounds allow various water sources to naturally percolate into the Central Basin aquifers. During this slow filtration process, soil layers act as natural purifiers for the water.

POTENTIAL SOURCE WATER CONTAMINANTS INCLUDE:

  • Microbial Contaminants: Including bacteria and viruses potentially originating from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife.
  • Inorganic Contaminants: Such as salts and metals, either naturally occurring or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming activities.
  • Pesticides and Herbicides: From various sources including agriculture, urban runoff, and residential applications.
  • Organic Chemical Contaminants: Both synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, storm runoff, agricultural operations, and septic systems.
  • Radioactive Contaminants: Either naturally present or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities.

SOURCE ASSESSMENT

A comprehensive assessment of Downey's municipal water resources was completed in 2003 by the State Department of Drinking Water. The supply was identified as most vulnerable to impacts from: automotive fuel stations, dry cleaning operations, injection/dry wells, sumps, metal plating/finishing/fabricating facilities, fleet terminals, furniture repair businesses, manufacturing operations, machine shops, and NPDES/Waste Discharge Requirement approved discharges. The complete assessment report is available by contacting the SWRCB, DDW at (818) 551-2004 or the City of Downey Utilities Division at (562) 904-7202.
