Lansing Municipal Water Company and EPALansing Municipal Water Report Info
The Lansing region was originally part of the Northwest Territory in the late 1700s before being transferred to the Illinois Territory in 1809. Illinois achieved statehood in 1818 as the 21st state in the Union. The area began attracting settlers, predominantly German and Dutch immigrants, who established homes, farms, and businesses.
In 1856, the Pennsylvania Railroad extended through Lansing. The area's natural sand ridge proved valuable, as the railroad began transporting sand to Chicago for construction projects. Today's downtown business district sits on what was once a sand pit. By 1860, the settlement had minimal commercial development – just the railroad, surrounding farms, a general store, saloon, cobbler, and two blacksmith shops.
