About Us
Review your recipes carefully. Among the various herbs, spices, oils, meats, pasta varieties and vegetables, there's typically one vital component missing from the ingredient list: water. Yes, water is often mentioned in the directions but rarely listed with the ingredients. This oversight is remarkable, given water's crucial role in cooking. As noted by Epicurious.com, water is the "ingredient that can do almost anything," with its softening properties expanding our edible options considerably.
In Memphis, water isn't just an ingredient for food preparation but a fundamental element of our quality of life. Our water comes from an underground aquifer - now known as the Memphis Aquifer - a natural subterranean reservoir located 350 to 1,100 feet below ground level. This aquifer is part of a larger system extending to depths of 2,600 feet (Figure 1). These aquifers consist of clay, sand, and gravel layers that naturally filter impurities from water contained within the sandy areas.
The wells connected to this system are commonly referred to as "artesian wells" because they draw naturally-purified water to the surface by releasing built-up pressure, causing water to rise through the well similar to liquid through a straw. As a result, Memphis water is renowned for its exceptional quality.

While Memphis Light, Gas and Water has only existed since 1939, its predecessor companies began operations over a century ago. Both MLGW and the services we provide have evolved significantly since our post-Civil War beginnings.
The city's first utility company, Memphis Gas Light Company, was established in 1852. It served a population of just 10,000 people within a mere three-square-mile area. At that time, the city drew its water supply from reservoirs and the Wolf River.
Today, MLGW stands as the nation's largest three-service municipal utility, serving approximately 421,000 customers. Since 1939, MLGW has consistently met Memphis and Shelby County residents' utility needs by providing dependable and cost-effective electricity, natural gas, and water services.
