Is your municipal water safe? Yes, our water meets all EPA health standards. We've conducted extensive testing for more than 80 potential contaminants in our water supply. As shown in our detailed chart, only 13 of these contaminants were detected at measurable levels.

Where does your water come from? Your treated municipal water is sourced from the Nolichucky River. We actively work to protect this water from contamination and collaborate with the State to evaluate potential vulnerabilities in our water supply.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has developed a Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) Report for the untreated water sources serving our system. This report rates untreated water sources as moderately susceptible, moderately vulnerable, or slightly vulnerable based on geological factors and human activities near the water source. Johnson City's sources are rated as moderately susceptible to potential contamination.

Why are there contaminants in my water? All municipal water, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. How can I get involved? Our Board of Mayor and Alderman meets on the second Monday of each month at City Hall, 123 Boone St. at 6:00 p.m. We welcome public participation at these meetings.

Is our water system meeting other requirements? State and EPA regulations require us to regularly test and report on our water to ensure safety. We have met all these requirements. Results of unregulated contaminant analysis are available upon request.

1. How often is Johnson City's water tested? Water samples are collected and analyzed daily for basic parameters, with comprehensive testing performed according to EPA-mandated schedules for different contaminant types.
2. What causes water hardness in our area? The geological formations in the Johnson City region contain limestone and other minerals that naturally dissolve into water as it flows through the ground.
3. Is tap water safe for infants and pregnant women? While our water meets safety standards, consult your healthcare provider for specific recommendations during pregnancy or for infant formula preparation.
