The sources of tap water (both from faucets and bottled products) include rivers, lakes, creeks, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. The Catawba River flows through the heart of Burke County and Morganton, serving as Morganton's primary water source. As water travels across land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from animal presence or human activity.

Brentwood maintains water quality from the City of Morganton's metering points through more than one hundred fifty-six miles of water distribution lines. The system consists of pipes ranging from two-inch PVC to 12-inch ductile iron, managed by six dedicated professionals who operate the distribution network serving Brentwood's customers.

The six certified administrators conduct comprehensive testing including turbidity, chlorine, and pH levels on a regular schedule to ensure water customers receive safe, healthy, and consistent service. Water treatment staff also collect samples from various points within the distribution system for daily (Monday-Friday) chemical analysis.

This testing includes measuring hardness, alkalinity, iron, manganese, fluoride, chlorine residual, and phosphate levels. Additionally, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation requires Portland water treatment plant staff to collect 20 samples monthly for bacteriological testing from pre-designated sampling locations throughout the system.
