Cleveland Utilities began its journey on August 16, 1939, when the City of Cleveland's Board of Mayor and Commissioners acquired the Tennessee Electric Power Company properties, establishing Cleveland Electric System. The Cleveland Water Works had been operating since 1895 under the direction of Commissioners of the Cleveland Water System.
In 1959, the Board placed the Cleveland Water System under their supervision. By March 1976, after extensive research, the Board merged the Cleveland Water System and Cleveland Electric System operations under the name Cleveland Utilities. In 1981, a dedicated Board of Public Utilities for the City of Cleveland was established with five members.
The Board meets every fourth Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Tom Wheeler Training Center, though dates and times may change (confirmation available at 423-472-4521 extension 330).
Today, Cleveland Utilities serves approximately 31,887 electric customers, 32,097 water customers, and 19,194 sewer customers throughout Cleveland and a significant portion of Bradley County.
As one of Tennessee Valley Authority's 160 electric distributors, Cleveland Utilities purchases power from TVA at 161,000 volts through two distribution point substations: East Cleveland and South Cleveland. This power travels through sub-transmission lines, distribution stations, and distribution feeders to reach all customers, with safety and reliability as primary objectives.
