Murfreesboro Water Department
About Us
Murfreesboro residents receive water from two primary surface sources: the East Fork of the Stones River and J. Percy Priest Lake. Our mission is to protect these water sources from potential contamination through careful monitoring of geological conditions and human activities nearby.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has developed a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report available at the TDEC website: https://www.Tn.Gov/environment/program-areas/wrwater-sources/water-best/source-waterassessment.Html. This assessment includes Murfreesboro Water Resources Department (MWRSD) among other regional suppliers.
SWAP Reports classify water sources as "reasonably vulnerable," "moderately vulnerable," or "slightly vulnerable" based on geological factors and nearby human activities. In December 2017, MWRD completed an updated SWAP assessment approved by TDEC, with both water sources continuing to be classified as "fairly vulnerable" to potential contamination.
Natural water sources always contain some level of impurities or contaminants. Even bottled water contains small amounts of contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about water contaminants and potential health effects, residents can contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
