Is our water safe to consume? Yes! Kinston's municipal water meets all federal and state quality standards.

Does my tap water come from surface water or groundwater? Your water source depends on your location. Downtown residents, hospital area homes, and Douglas Island properties typically receive water from the Last Chance Basin aquifer (groundwater). Areas north of the hospital generally receive surface water from the Salmon Creek Water Filtration Plant.

How does water travel from source to home? Our distribution system operates as a closed, pressurized network. A combination of pumps and gravity helps push water through to homes and businesses. In higher-pressure zones, special valves reduce pressure to appropriate levels for household taps.

What treatment processes are used? Kinston enjoys exceptionally high-quality water sources. Chlorine is added for disinfection purposes, while soda ash is incorporated into Salmon Creek water to reduce its corrosive properties.

Why does my water occasionally appear discolored? Some parts of our infrastructure are aging. Rust or sediment can accumulate over time, and changes in water flow may disturb these deposits causing temporary discoloration. Air bubbles can also create a "milky" appearance. Common triggers include:

  • Firefighting activities in your neighborhood
  • Water main breaks or repairs
  • New water main construction
  • Hydrant flushing or maintenance work

The water remains safe despite temporary appearance changes.

What should I do when my water looks discolored? Run cold water for 5-10 minutes. If the issue persists after an hour, contact the Water Utility office.

What is a cross-connection? This refers to a physical connection between drinking water and potential contamination sources. In homes, common cross-connections may involve garden hoses, dishwashers, or heating systems.
