Once water is collected from the source, it undergoes multiple chemical and physical treatments to ensure contaminants are removed, making it safe and clean for consumption. The City's water filtration facility can process approximately 8.95 million gallons daily, more than double our typical consumption needs.

The treatment plant employs several mechanical and chemical processes to eliminate color, odor, and taste issues along with organic materials, dirt, and sediment. Water passes through sand filters and our newly installed granular activated carbon system. Disinfection occurs through chlorination, fluoride is added to promote dental health, and corrosion inhibitors protect pipes and plumbing infrastructure.

Processed water is then pumped to our above-ground contact tank and storage facilities before reaching homes and businesses. Our water system serves around 30,000 residents through 5,675 service connections. The infrastructure includes over 73 miles of water mains ranging from 4 to 30 inches in diameter, plus more than 800 fire hydrants and approximately 3,500 gate valves used during emergencies or repairs.

In 2017, we produced approximately 1.3 billion gallons of water. The daily average distribution was 3.6 million gallons, with peak usage reaching 5.5 million gallons in a single day. About 678 million gallons were delivered to customers, with the difference attributed to maintenance flushing, firefighting, leaks, unauthorized usage, and other non-metered purposes.

For 19 consecutive years, our Water Department has conducted citywide leak detection surveys annually. By identifying and repairing leaks promptly, we prevent water waste and help maintain reasonable costs for consumers. Staff perform various maintenance tasks including system-wide flushing twice yearly and ongoing repair and replacement of hydrants and regulators.

The 38 leaks detected during our survey were all successfully repaired. We continue upgrading water meters with new radio reading devices, which will provide real-time data through AMI technology once fully implemented. The Newburgh Water Department is proud to announce our state-of-the-art granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration system has been operational since January 5, 2018.

6. What are the policies regarding bikes, skateboards, and rollerblades? Bicycles are prohibited on the boardwalk between May 15 and September 30 of each year, except between the hours of 6:00 am and 9:00 am. Bicycles are prohibited on the sidewalks at all times. Please use the marked bike lanes. The use of skateboards, roller skates, and in-line skates is illegal on the boardwalk and bandstand (which includes all sidewalks leading to the boardwalk).
7. What are the policies concerning dogs in Bethany Beach? Town code requires that you clean up after your dog at all times. Dogs must be leashed and curbed at all times in Bethany Beach. Dogs are prohibited at the beach and boardwalk from May 15 to September 30. Licenses are required and tags must be worn at all times. Dogs found running at large or contrary to these policies can be delivered to the Delaware SPCA
