Massachusetts Water Utility Companies

The Oak Bluffs Water District proudly presents our 2017 Customer Confidence Report, an annual overview of your water quality. This report details where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to regulatory standards. We're committed to transparency because informed residents are our strongest partners.

As part of our ongoing commitment to you, we've completed several system improvements this past year:

  • Continued renovation of the Lagoon Pond Pumping Station
  • Completed 1 water main repair/renewal, 7 service repairs and 5 renewals
  • Installed 24 new service connections, 3 meter setups, and 3 fire lines
  • Added 1,495 linear feet of new pipes, replaced 349 meters, and installed 39 new meters
  • Installed 3 new hydrants, replaced 2, and performed 89 backflow inspections

Our water system is interconnected with both Edgartown and Tisbury water systems, providing emergency backup supply if needed. To enhance water quality, we implement several treatment processes:

  • Fluoride addition for dental health (per Board of Health guidelines)
  • Lime and Potassium Hydroxide to reduce lead and copper through pH adjustment
  • Polyphosphates to prevent iron and manganese from forming nuisance deposits
  • Sodium hypochlorite for disinfection, ensuring water is microbiologically safe

All chemicals used meet National Sanitation Institute standards and American Water Works Association requirements. Water quality is continuously monitored by our team and MassDEP to assess treatment effectiveness.

The Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report gave our system a "high" susceptibility rating due to at least one high-risk land use within the water supply protection areas surrounding our five wells. Key concerns include hazardous material storage, residential septic systems, heating oil storage, and stormwater runoff.

Residents can help protect our valuable water resources by:

  • Maintaining septic systems properly
  • Reducing pesticide and fertilizer use
  • Disposing of hazardous household chemicals at designated collection events
  • Supporting water protection initiatives at town meetings

With careful stewardship and pollution reduction, our groundwater will remain a vital natural resource for generations to come.
