About Us
The Orleans Water Division is proud to present our annual municipal water quality report. Our team remains dedicated to delivering the highest quality water possible to our community. We continue to meet regulatory challenges, protect source water, promote conservation, and engage with community education initiatives while serving all our customers' needs.
Important Health Information: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems (such as those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants) should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption. Water Main Flushing Program: Our distribution mains deliver high-quality water throughout Orleans, but water quality can deteriorate in certain sections over time. Our regular flushing program removes sediments like iron and manganese that affect taste, clarity, and color. This process also prevents microorganism growth by ensuring adequate disinfectant levels. While temporary water quality changes may occur during flushing, we recommend running cold water for several minutes if this happens and avoiding hot water use to prevent sediment buildup in your water heater.

Substances in Your Water: To ensure safety, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. EPA establish limits for contaminants in public water. The FDA and Massachusetts Department of Public Health set similar standards for bottled water. All water sources naturally contain some level of contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. Our groundwater sources may contain natural minerals, and in some cases, substances from human activity. Potential contaminants include microbial contaminants from sewage facilities or wildlife; inorganic contaminants from natural deposits or human activities; pesticides and herbicides from agriculture or urban runoff; organic chemicals from industrial processes; and naturally occurring radioactive materials.
Cross-Connection Safety: Cross-connections between drinking water lines and equipment containing chemicals or water of questionable quality pose significant contamination risks. Common household sources include garden hoses left in pools or attached to chemical sprayers. Our water department implements a comprehensive cross-connection control program to protect against these hazards.

Brief History of Orleans, Cape Cod
Originally established as South Parish of Eastham in 1644, Orleans was formally incorporated in 1797 after seeking independence since 1717. The area's indigenous Nauset people maintained peaceful relations with early settlers, with their primary agricultural settlements located in what is now Nauset Heights and South Orleans.
Maritime influence has shaped Orleans' economy from its earliest days. Local sea captains and sailors crewed merchant and whaling vessels during the age of sail. Salt works once lined the bay and Town Cove shorelines, providing essential preservation materials for the fishing industry until the 1850s when salt deposits discovered elsewhere rendered local production obsolete.
The fishing industry has experienced cycles of prosperity throughout Orleans' history. Fish weirs, small boat operations, and coastal whaling were early economic drivers. Today, Rock Harbor hosts a substantial charter vessel fleet for sport fishing, continuing the town's maritime traditions. Shellfish harvesting, first demonstrated to settlers by the Nauset people, remains economically significant, with aquaculture showing promising growth.
Transportation evolved from packet boats to railroad service, which arrived in 1865, opening new commercial opportunities including manufacturing and early tourism. Railroad service ceased in the 1950s as automotive transportation took precedence. The establishment of the National Seashore Park in 1962 transformed Orleans into the tourism-centered economy that exists today, with its natural beauty attracting both visitors and a substantial retirement community.
