Historically, significant measures have been implemented to safeguard the Chicagoland water supply, including offshore crib construction, interceptor sewer systems, the Chicago River lock-and-dam network, and the city's Waterfront Zoning Ordinance.
Currently, the city relies on the Division of Water Management, Department of Environment, and MWRDGC to ensure water supply safety. Chicago water officials actively participate in the West Shore Water Producers Association, regularly discussing water quality incidents (spills, tanker leaks, invasive species) and general lake conditions during quarterly meetings.
Lake Michigan benefits from various organizations working to maintain or improve water quality. One effective approach to protecting water sources is developing local programs to guard against potential contaminants. Since urban development dominates Illinois' Lake Michigan watershed, most protection activities focus on urban concerns. Residents should understand how everyday urban activities can impact their water source.
