Water Source Information: Palos Hills receives its water from the Village of Oak Lawn (IL0312220), which obtains water from the City of Chicago. The source water for Chicago is surface water from Lake Michigan.
The Illinois EPA has completed a source water assessment for our supply. If you would like to review this information, please visit City Hall or call our water operator at 708-598-3400 ext. 1111. For a summary version of the Source Water Assessments, including information on Source Water Protection Initiatives, visit the Illinois EPA website at http://www.epa.state.il.us/cgi-bin/wp/swap-factsheets.pl.
Source Water Vulnerability: The Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources for community water supplies susceptible to potential contamination. Surface water allows contaminants to migrate into intakes with only dilution as protection, requiring mandatory treatment for all surface water in Illinois. Chicago's offshore intakes are typically far enough from shore that contamination is rarely a concern, except during wet-weather flows and river reversals. Additionally, the intake structures may attract waterfowl that can concentrate waste deposits near the intake, potentially affecting water quality.

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:
Palos Hills Municipal Water Company and EPAThe EPA oversees municipal water systems to ensure compliance with federal standards. Water quality reports must include information about detected contaminants, potential health effects, and actions taken to ensure safety.
Surface water sources like Lake Michigan require regular monitoring for seasonal changes in quality. The Chicago water system, which supplies Palos Hills, conducts extensive testing throughout the year.
Residents should be aware that home filtration may be beneficial for addressing taste, odor, and certain contaminants present in municipal supplies.
