About Us
The water supply for Homer Township comes from Lake Michigan surface water, purchased through the Village of Bedford Park and American Lake Water Company. This district provides water to Homer Glen village and portions of Orland, Lemont, and Homer Townships.
Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources potentially vulnerable to contamination, requiring comprehensive treatment including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Primary pollution sources for Illinois lakes include agricultural runoff, septic systems, and shoreline erosion.
The IEPA has completed source water assessments for Chicago, with copies available upon request. Chicago has one near-shore intake susceptible to stormwater runoff, marina activities, and groundwater influences. Two offshore intakes are positioned where shoreline impacts are minimal.
Environmental Stewardship
Water conservation is vital for future generations. Our environmental initiatives include:
- Student Education: Our water quality team visits schools with our Mobile Education Center, offering hands-on water testing and STEM learning opportunities.
- Community Events: We participate in "It's The River Day" celebrations and contribute to river cleanup efforts including Illinois River Sweep and Great Mississippi River Cleanup.
- Environmental Partnerships: Our Environmental Grant Program has awarded over $195,000 to 51+ Illinois water protection projects since 2009.
- Pharmaceutical Disposal: We've implemented 35+ pharmaceutical disposal programs preventing improper medication disposal.
Internal Initiatives: Our facilities utilize energy-efficient technologies like variable frequency motors and motion sensor lighting. We incorporate native plantings to reduce water usage, and our Champaign County treatment plant achieved LEED® certification—Illinois' first for a water treatment facility.
