Potential Contaminants in Water
To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations set similar limits for bottled water. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population.
All water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. Water can collect naturally occurring minerals, radioactive materials, and substances from animal or human activity as it travels over land or underground.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial Contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations and wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or farming
- Herbicides & Pesticides: from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
Water Source Information
Oak Brook's water supply is purchased surface water from Lake Michigan, filtered at Chicago's Jardine Filtration Plant near Navy Pier. This advanced facility can process and pump 1.4 billion gallons of high-quality water daily. The water travels from Chicago to the DuPage Water Commission's Lexington Pumping Facility and then to the DuPage Water Commission in Elmhurst. Oak Brook receives water from three separate locations throughout the Village before distribution to homes and businesses.
We are contractually obligated to purchase all water from the DuPage Water Commission. In emergencies, we maintain three deep wells that are regularly tested to ensure safe, clean potable water if needed.
