Each year, Oswego tests your tap water according to USEPA and state health standards. Our team works diligently to protect our groundwater supply and deliver the highest quality water possible. This report summarizes the quality of water we provided last year and highlights our ongoing water safety initiatives.

The report includes information about your water source, composition, and how it compares to regulatory standards. We're committed to transparency because informed customers are our greatest allies. If you have questions about this report or our water system, please contact Timothy Zasada, Assistant Public Works Overseer - Utilities at 630-554-3242.

We encourage our valued customers to learn more about their water quality. You're welcome to attend any of our regularly scheduled board meetings held the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill.

Municipal water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the USEPA's Safe Municipal Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants may face increased risk from infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. USEPA/CDC guidelines for reducing infection risks are available through the Safe Municipal Water Hotline.

Oswego's current water supply comes from eight deep wells that draw from a sandstone aquifer. While this source provides excellent quality water to meet community needs, these wells often contain elevated concentrations of Radium-226 and Radium-228. The Village employs a filtration process for radium removal, keeping levels below the EPA's maximum allowable level of 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).

Fluoride levels in our deep sandstone aquifer naturally meet EPA and Illinois Department of Public Health standards without additional fluoride treatment at well sites. All wells are treated to remove radium, chlorinated to eliminate microbial contaminants, and treated with polyphosphate for corrosion control before distribution.

Our water system received a vulnerability waiver renewal for January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019, based on favorable monitoring history and aquifer characteristics. This special exemption extends sampling requirements to once every nine years for SOCs and Cyanide, and once every six years for VOCs for Wells 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10. Well 11 has not yet received IEPA waivers.

Oswego Municipal Water Report Information

Located approximately 50 miles west of Chicago in Kendall County at the convergence of Waubonsie Creek and the Fox River, Oswego's settlement was partly influenced by its transportation potential. A natural limestone shelf creates a smooth-bottomed ford across the river just above the creek's mouth, making it a preferred crossing point first for Native Americans and later for American settlers who began arriving in the 1830s.

William Smith Wilson and his wife, Rebecca (Pearce) Wilson, were the first to settle in present-day Oswego. Wilson and his brother-in-law, Daniel Pearce, explored the area in 1832 and relocated their families to their claims in 1833. Just two years later, in 1835, entrepreneurs Lewis Brinsmaid Judson and Levi F. Arnold laid out the town on land still formally owned by local Potowatomi, Ottawa, and Chippewa tribes. The U.S. Government removed these Native American communities in 1836 and began surveying land along the Fox River.

The town was initially named Hudson by Judson and Arnold, both New York natives. When the U.S. Government established a post office in January 1837, it was called Lodi. Seeking clarity, residents gathered later that year and chose Oswego, another name familiar to the area's New York settlers.

The ford across the Fox River was an economic attraction from the beginning. Decoalia Towle and his wife Elizabeth established an inn and tavern in Oswego on the route to the ford, joining Arnold's general store and post office in the growing business district. According to government surveyors in 1837, Oswego consisted of approximately 30 wooden structures.

Early transportation routes through Oswego included a road from Joliet to Galena using the river ford, another from Chicago to Ottawa, and a third major road following the Fox River north from Ottawa to La Fox. This strategic location later helped Oswego become a transportation hub where three state highways (IL-25, IL-71, and IL-31) converge and through which U.S. Highway 34 passes. Recent annexations have expanded town limits to include a portion of U.S. Highway 30.
