Illinois Water Utility Companies

Naperville's Water Utility takes pride in delivering quality water that meets safety standards for residents. The water provided by the City complies with all Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) requirements, including those for lead content.

While there isn't a lead issue affecting Naperville's water quality, the city wants residents to be informed about their water. Construction activities in your neighborhood related to water main repairs, lead service line work, or meter maintenance may temporarily increase lead levels in your water supply.

Having a lead service line doesn't necessarily mean lead will be present in your water, but it does increase risk if the line is disturbed. In July 2016, the City implemented enhanced notification procedures as required by IEPA to improve water quality awareness and reduce potential lead exposure in drinking water.

These notifications are informational and represent an additional effort to provide proactive health and safety tips as part of the City's approach to educate residents about water quality. Residents affected by construction now receive notices describing the work and providing contact information for questions.

As required by IEPA, Water Utility personnel began inventorying all water services in September 2016 and found approximately 800 customers might have lead service lines out of more than 43,300 water connections. As of March 2018, staff confirmed about 345 structures are served by lead water lines, with this number changing as lines are removed.

City staff is committed to helping residents determine the best replacement options for lead service lines. There is no lead situation affecting Naperville's water quality, but if you received a notice since September 2016, we encourage you to schedule an inspection appointment by contacting Monica O'Loughlin at (630) 305-3775.
