Strolling through La Grange provides visitors with a glimpse into the past, showcasing how the town appeared to its earliest settlers. Homes in the historic districts represent outstanding examples of architecture spanning from the late 19th to early 20th century, featuring diverse architectural styles.
The architectural quality, historical significance, and remarkable preservation earned national recognition when the Village of La Grange Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The National Register, authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, is part of a nationwide program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historical and archaeological resources.
Properties listed in the Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects significant to American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture. The National Register operates under the National Park Service, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Inclusion on the National Register is honorary, acknowledging a historic place's importance to the community, state, or nation. Under federal law, private property owners listed in the National Register may maintain, manage, or dispose of their property as they choose, provided there is no federal involvement. Owners have no legal obligation to open their properties to the public, restore them, or maintain them if they choose not to.

La Grange Municipal Water Company and CDC- What should I do on service day?
Street Service: Position your curbside container directly in front of your property. For cul-de-sac residents, place containers at the sidewalk edge. Follow instructions on the container lid - arrows must point toward the street. Maintain 36-inch clearance between containers and 5 feet from obstacles like vehicles, utility poles, and hydrants. Ensure mailbox access remains clear. Bagging trash is recommended, especially during windy conditions. Avoid securing lids with cords, rocks, etc. For additional waste, place items at least 5 feet from your container, not stacked on the lid.
Alley Service: Place containers on the designated alley side. Semi-automated collection methods will be used, with refuse loaded at the rear of the truck.
- What if my trash day falls on a holiday?
If your scheduled collection falls on a State Holiday, your trash will be collected the day before. Please check the Trash Holiday Schedule link for applicable holidays.
- How do I clean my trash container?
Container maintenance is the homeowner's responsibility. You may clean the container inside and out with soap and water as frequently as needed.
- What waste types can go in the green container?
Acceptable: household trash, food waste, yard waste.
Prohibited: dirt, sod, rock, concrete, hot ashes, flammable materials (oil, gas, paint), construction/remodeling/demolition debris, toxic or hazardous waste.
- Will moving boxes be collected?
Boxes will only be collected if broken down, bundled, and set out on extra trash day. Consider using the free residential dumpster service for moving waste. View Dumpster Liability Form.

No hazardous waste or liquids will be collected. This includes wet paint, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, flammable substances, and other household chemicals. For hazardous waste information, contact the Town office at 775-782-5976. Refrigerators and freezers require an additional fee for freon removal.
- Is there an additional trash day?
On your third trash day each month, you may place extra trash beside your container using bags, cans, or other containers. Weight must not exceed 50 pounds or the container capacity. Yard trimmings and branches should be securely bundled. No hazardous materials permitted.
- Are residential dumpsters available?
Subject to availability, you may request a residential dumpster at your property for one week free of charge, up to twice yearly. Additional rentals incur charges for each dump.
