The City of Chicago uses Lake Michigan as its water source, operating through two water treatment facilities. The Jardine Water Purification Plant serves northern areas while the South Water Purification Plant covers southern regions. Lake Michigan stands as the only Great Lake entirely within U.S. borders, touching Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

The Illinois EPA conducted a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) to protect public water supplies by inventorying contamination risks. Surface water sources are considered vulnerable to potential pollution, with mandatory treatment required for all surface water in Illinois.

Chicago's offshore intakes are positioned to minimize shoreline impacts, though seasonal wet-weather flows and river reversals can affect water quality. The crib structures may attract waterfowl, potentially affecting source water. Shoreline intakes remain susceptible to stormwater runoff and marina activities.

The City of Chicago conducts ongoing monitoring for Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and E. coli as part of its water quality program. Treatment processes are optimized to effectively remove these organisms. The city maintains compliance with the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule through continued monitoring, with no Cryptosporidium or Giardia detected in recent samples.

Additional monitoring for hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) continues, though the USEPA has not established a standard for this contaminant which has both natural and industrial sources. Water quality reports are available on the City's website.

Brookfield Municipal Water Report Information

On May 8, 1993, the Chicago Tribune characterized Brookfield by highlighting its "neighborliness and family orientation" as key reasons residents appreciate calling Brookfield home. The article noted that Brookfield is a "community that prioritizes family first, and possibly second, third and fourth as well," describing a town where "everyone seems to be on a first-name basis and the town president answers his own phone."

Twenty years later in 2013, Chicago magazine recognized Brookfield as one of metro Chicago's top destinations for first-time homebuyers. The magazine highlighted: "Nature enthusiasts will appreciate this western suburb, home to Brookfield Zoo and portions of the Salt Creek forest preserve. Attractive brick homes and post-war Georgians can be readily found for under $200,000."

Strategically situated 13 miles west of downtown Chicago (41° North Latitude, 87° West Longitude), with convenient access to trains, buses, highways, and airports, Brookfield covers just 3.1 square miles. Often referred to as "the world's most visited village" due to the renowned Brookfield Zoo's numerous visitors, residents occasionally hear lion roars or elephant trumpets on quiet mornings.

Brookfield represents a vibrant, diverse community of 19,085 residents supporting various churches, quality schools, an exceptional library, modest taxes, accessible transportation, and extensive parks and recreation programs. The village remains committed to economic development, modernization, neighborhood enhancement, and community safety, making it truly a remarkable place to live, raise families, shop, and conduct business.
