Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For comprehensive information on your tap water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Paradise Irrigation District Municipal Water Company and CDCWHAT IS THE METER CHANGE-OUT / AMI PROGRAM?
This district-wide upgrade replaces current electric and water meters with a new system (MIU) that utilizes radio frequency technology for readings. Meters are mechanical devices that naturally wear down over time. Installing new meters results in more efficient monitoring of electric and water usage throughout MEWS' service area, leading to better energy and water cost control plus improved customer service.
HOW DOES THE METER READING SYSTEM WORK?
The tower-based reading system provides daily meter readings from each account while reducing costs associated with manual readings. Each remote transmits data to strategically positioned collection systems, which then send information back to our main office. Every meter has a unique identification number ensuring only your reading is assigned to your account. Your billing process remains unchanged, but the new system enhances service for all customers.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SERVICE ENHANCEMENTS/SYSTEM BENEFITS?
Daily readings enable better leak monitoring, office-based final readings, improved consumption tracking, usage trend management, and outage control. The system detects reverse flow conditions and includes theft detection features. It helps eliminate human error and reduces fuel expenses related to manual meter reading, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint through decreased fuel consumption.
DOES THIS MEAN NO MORE METER READERS?
No, you'll still see service personnel in your neighborhood, just less frequently. MEWS staff will visit your property for routine service, maintenance, or repairs and will continue responding to electric and water emergencies.
WILL THE RADIO INTERFERE WITH MY ELECTRONICS?
No, the radio transmissions operate on a licensed frequency very different from those used by television signals, cordless phones, and other electronic devices. The equipment poses no risks or hazards.
HOW CAN I HELP MAKE INSTALLATION SMOOTHER?
Since the meters are located outside your home or building, you don't need to be present during installation. Please ensure our installer has adequate access to the meters.
WHAT WORK OCCURS AT MY PROPERTY?
Typically, the technician will locate your electric and water meters, remove the old ones, and install new electronic meter registers with MIU low-powered RF transmitters. The technician will record a final reading from the old meter and clean the work area afterward.
HOW LONG SHOULD THE INSTALLATION TAKE?
Under normal circumstances, installation takes approximately 30 minutes. Power and water will be turned off for about 5-10 minutes until each meter is replaced. Dewatering your line may cause some trapped air or slight discoloration in the water supply, which is normal and will clear after running your water for a few minutes.
IS THERE A COST TO CUSTOMERS?
There is no cost to customers for this upgrade. MEWS is responsible for the installation, inlet and outlet meter couplings, meter, and remote (MIU) equipment.
WHO WILL BE INSTALLING THE UPGRADE?
MEWS will utilize our own technicians' expertise for this project. You may call the main MEWS office to confirm we're working in your neighborhood.
