The staff at Pecan Grove MUD experiences legitimate concern when forecasts predict significant rainfall. While we all need precipitation for survival, heavy downpours place enormous strain on our wastewater collection and treatment systems due to storm runoff infiltrating the sanitary sewer network.
Water entering the collection system is known as Inflow and Infiltration (I&I). This excess water creates several problems:
- Overloads the collection infrastructure
- Causes backups in residential sewer lines
- Creates slow-flushing toilets
- Strains wastewater treatment capacity
Though sanitary sewer systems are designed to be separate from stormwater systems, several factors allow storm water to enter our network:
- Cracks and breaks in aging primary sewer lines
- Damaged manholes (surface, sidewall, or connection points)
- Deteriorated tap connections on main lines
- Residential service line issues (cracks, holes, decayed joints)
- Illegal drainage connections (roof gutters, yard drains)
The age of our infrastructure (parts dating to the 1950s) combined with Southeast Texas receiving over 60 inches of annual rainfall creates significant challenges. While we've invested nearly $14 million in modernizing our treatment facilities, addressing residential line issues remains critical but challenging since these repairs must occur on private property.
The district is partnering with state agencies on grant-funded programs to assist qualifying low-to-moderate income households with service line repairs. This approach benefits vulnerable residents while developing effective methods for community-wide improvements.
