The Powder Springs Water System is committed to delivering high-quality water that meets or exceeds federal and state standards. Our 2017 Water Quality Report confirms this achievement. Our primary goal is providing safe water to your home or business daily.

The City of Powder Springs purchases water from the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA), which supplies treated drinking water wholesale to regional municipalities. CCMWA employs advanced treatment equipment and continuous monitoring to ensure water quality. The system serves over 7,000 customer accounts, representing approximately 14,000 residents.

The CCMWA and Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) have completed a source water assessment identifying potential contamination sources for our drinking water supplies. This assessment helps prioritize watershed protection efforts.

Our water comes from two surface sources: The Wyckoff Treatment Division draws from Allatoona Lake (a Corps of Engineers reservoir in north Cobb, south Cherokee and south Bartow counties), while the Quarles Treatment Division uses Chattahoochee River water. After treatment, water is distributed through Cobb County and then to Powder Springs' distribution network.

The treatment process begins by pumping untreated water into sedimentation basins for initial debris removal and disinfection. Next comes flocculation, where gentle mixing with coagulants forms particles ("floc") that settle out, clarifying the water. The water then passes through sand filters to remove smaller particles. Final disinfection chemicals are added before distribution. Except for chlorine and fluoride, all treatment chemicals are removed before water reaches consumers.

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. Potential contaminants include microbial pathogens, inorganic compounds, pesticides/herbicides, organic chemicals, and radioactive materials.
