We are pleased to present you with the 2017 Annual Municipal Water Quality Report. Throughout 2017, your tap water met all New York State health standards for safe municipal water. This report provides a snapshot of last year's water quality testing results.

Our water comes from the Great Flats Aquifer, an abundant groundwater source. We extract water through twelve 70-foot drilled wells at our Rice Road treatment facility in Rotterdam. The water naturally maintains excellent quality and requires only minimal treatment: chlorination for disinfection, fluoridation for dental health, and inorganic phosphates for system protection.

In 2017, we maintained consistent service to approximately 62,000 residents in Schenectady through 19,000 service connections, as well as portions of Niskayuna and Rotterdam. We produced 4,395,517,660 gallons of water total, with a daily average of 12,042,514 gallons. Our peak usage day reached 18,229,382 gallons.

City metered water customers paid $0.002577 per gallon in 2017, with typical flat-rate households paying approximately $257.85 annually. To improve system efficiency, we'll be conducting leak detection and flushing programs in summer 2018.

For questions about this report or your municipal water, please contact the Department of Water at Room 206, City Hall, Schenectady, NY 12305, or call 518-382-5023. We're committed to keeping you informed about your water quality and protection efforts.

Westchester County Water District #1 (WCWD#1), which includes White Plains, Scarsdale, Mt. Vernon, and Yonkers, is working to comply with Federal Safe Drinking Water Act requirements regarding ultraviolet (UV) treatment installation. This equipment provides additional protection against waterborne parasites like Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

It's important to understand that the water supply remains completely safe to drink while Westchester County, the USEPA, and US Attorney work out the implementation strategy for UV treatment facilities. The water in Scarsdale and all WCWD#1 communities continues to meet safety standards.

Currently, the Ardsley Road Pump Station (ARPS) already has UV-treated water and supplies up to two million gallons daily. The discussion centers around the implementation timing and approach for adding UV treatment to the Reeves Newsom Water Supply Station (RNWSS) and other district facilities.

Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County Health Commissioner, has issued this statement: "I want to assure residents in Mount Vernon, Scarsdale, White Plains and Yonkers that their municipal water is safe. Questions have been raised about a legal action by the Department of Justice regarding Water District No. 1's compliance with EPA regulations, but no public health advisories have been issued about water safety related to cryptosporidium, and no cryptosporidium illnesses have been linked to the water supply. The water is continuously monitored and tested weekly by New York City Department of Environmental Protection. This is strictly a regulatory compliance matter about enhanced treatment implementation, not about any specific health or safety violations."
