WATER SOURCES: Well #3, Well #4, and SRMA Well 5, all classified as Groundwater sources.
HEALTH INFORMATION: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Persons with compromised immune systems—including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, certain elderly individuals, and infants—may face higher health risks. These residents should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding municipal water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate methods to reduce infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
WATER MONITORING: We continuously monitor for contaminants in your municipal water as required by federal and state regulations. The tables in our annual report show monitoring results from January 1 to December 31, 2017. Pennsylvania allows monitoring for certain contaminants less than annually since their concentrations typically remain stable.

The Schuylkill County Municipal Authority (SCMA) was established by Schuylkill County Commissioners through certification of Incorporation on August 22, 1961. During their December 4, 1961 meeting, the SCMA Board approved purchasing the Pottsville Water Company (PWC) for $7,622,000.00.
The original PWC was chartered on April 11, 1834, with initial capital of $20,000.00 divided into 800 shares valued at $25.00 each. Their first water source was a spring at Eleventh and Mahantongo Streets in Pottsville, connected by 3,500 feet of 6" pipe and 700 feet of 4" pipe to serve downtown.
System expansion occurred steadily with the Wolf Creek reservoir coming online in 1854, followed by service extensions to St. Clair, Port Carbon, Palo Alto, and Mt. Carbon. The Park Basin equalizing dam was constructed in 1856, and Eisenhuth Dam followed in 1874.
Throughout subsequent decades, tributaries including Mill Creek, Cranberry Run, Tar Run, Kaufman Run, Mud Run and Indian Run were incorporated into the system. Major reservoir constructions included Kaufman (1885), Wolf Creek (1910), Indian Run (1926) and Tar Run (1933).
Service area growth continued through acquisitions of East Norwegian Township Water Company, Norwegian Township Water Company and New Castle Township Water Company by 1929. Infrastructure improvements included caretaker residences at Eisenhuth Dam (1899) and Indian Run (1900), plus pumping stations and treatment facilities.
The first water treatment system was installed at Broad Mountain in 1924, representing the first treatment facility for the Pottsville Water Company. Additional upgrades followed, including soda ash treatment at Indian Run in 1940 and a 2.5-million gallon storage tank on Sharp Mountain in 1929.
In 1961, the Schuylkill County Municipal Authority formed and acquired the former Pottsville Water Company, beginning a new era of infrastructure development and system improvement that continues to this day.
